Aircraft Bearings

Bearings are the tiny, unseen heroes in the world of things that go; the men behind the curtain that make movement possible. A bearing is much like a tiny wheel, positioned again in the center of a larger wheel, whose job it is to reduce friction between surfaces and allow smooth and constant rotational motion that in turn moves an object. It is a critical piece that requires a delicate balance of torque and various other factors, without which disaster is sure to occur.

In the case of aircraft bearings, there are many factors that directly affect this small component that are not an issue with land-based machines. As the plane descends in altitude, for example, the temperature drastically drops, rapidly moving from sub-zero temperatures to extreme heat at breaking. Along with this drop in temperature comes the sudden movement of the wheels that happens at touchdown, at which time the wheels accelerate to incredible speeds. Because of these changes, the bearings not only need to be stable and solid, but also need to be flexible and able to adapt quickly. If such adaptation is not made, or if proper care has not been taken in torquing of the bearings, disaster is prone to happen. In such a case overheating and loss of lubricant will occur resulting in damage to the bearing, and possibly a detachment of the wheel to the plane itself, in which consequences can be fatal. It is no wonder then, why the bearings are often called the unsung hero.

Overshadowed by the larger and noisier components of a machine, they are easily underappreciated for the amount of work that they do. A bearing is a wonderful example of the complexity and delicacy of machines, although on the surface they may seem anything but. While a bearing looks like nothing more than a small cylindrical steel piece, the precise balance it must strike is staggering, and the brilliance behind the invention of such an object measures up to that of some of the most genius of the world’s history. Although it may pale in comparison to science’s great achievements, the invention and refinement of the bearing has allowed humanity to explore the planet, delve the depths of the sea, and venture out into air and space. Not only that, but looking closer to home, many of the tools used in mundane daily tasks are made possible, once again, by the bearing. The lawnmowers and wheel barrows of the world also owe their mobility to this tiny object. It is no exaggeration to imagine a world drastically different from the one humans inhabit today without it, one where travel would be limited, daily tasks more arduous, and our achievements severely altered.

Without this critical, small, and unassuming part, what we know to be possible today would be only a dream, futuristic ideas still to be realized, written about in classroom textbooks with vividly drawn pictures depicting a hoped for future. Thankfully, we aren’t in a world like that, waiting for the wheel, literally, to be invented. Our greatest, and most humble, human achievements have much thanks to give to the small and wondrous bearing.
